Fest Afrika Spring Jam kicks off on Saturday, April 25, 2026, with an afternoon dance workshop featuring the energetic northern Tanzanian sogota dance. The workshop will be taught by Ally and Julia Milao from Sisi Majitu, based in Jyväskylä.
Sogota is an energetic, humorous, and fast‑paced traditional dance of the Sukuma people of northern Tanzania, in which dancers imitate colonial‑era soldiers. The class is accompanied by live drumming, and in addition to dancing, participants will also sing traditional songs. The workshop will take place at GL-Salonki (Satakunnankatu 28 B, Tampere) from 4 PM to 6 PM.
Register for the dance workshop using the registration form.
The price of the workshop is 20 euros. If you’d like to purchase a combined ticket for both the workshop and the evening party, the total price is 30 euros.
Ally Milao is a dancer and drummer born and raised in Tanzania’s arts capital, Bagamoyo. Julia Milao graduated from the Bagamoyo College of Arts in 2012 with a major in dance.
