This year, the Fest Afrika Festival places a strong emphasis on sustainable lifestyles and environmental awareness through collaboration with Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto and Kalevan Halli – Cultural Center for Sustainable Living. In spring 2026, Fest Afrika was selected as one of Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto’s Toimintatonni partners. As part of the partnership, the festival kick-off event will feature a recycled-instrument workshop, and information about recycling will be distributed in multiple languages at the African marketplace.
The festival week will begin with a free and open kick-off event at Kalevan Halli – the Cultural Center for Sustainable Living – in the Kaleva district of Tampere on Tuesday, July 28. The program includes building musical instruments from recycled materials and participating in music jam sessions. Come and create your own instrument!
At the same time, there will be KorjausKlubi (Repair Club), a weekly community gathering open to everyone interested in repairing broken items. Participants can share repair tips, learn practical skills, and work together in a collaborative environment.
Visitors to the kick-off event will also have the opportunity to enjoy the vibrant community garden located in the courtyard of Kalevan Halli. Kalevan Halli – Cultural Center for Sustainable Living is an open, non-commercial space dedicated to community culture, art, creativity, and social interaction. The center hosts several organizations and initiatives, and its activities are coordinated by Jälleenrakentajat Cooperative.
On Saturday, August 1, an African marketplace event will be held in the courtyard of the Nekalab Cultural Center. Visitors will have the chance to play instruments built during the recycled-instrument workshop together with other participants and enjoy the lively multicultural market atmosphere. Recycling tips and information will also be available in several languages.
