Registration to the Fest Afrika workshops is now open! We offer a wide range of traditional and contemporary African dance styles, as well as West African singing. The workshops will take place from Thursday, July 30 to Sunday, August 2.

The Fest Afrika dance workshops kick off on Thursday with Riikka Maria’s Kizomba solo and Afrohouse workshops. Kizomba is a dance style that originated in Angola in the late 1970s and early 1980s, drawing influences from semba and Caribbean zouk. During the Fest Afrika Kizomba Solo workshop participants will learn the basic steps of kizomba, stepping technique, musicality, and self-expression. No partner is required for this class.
In the Afrohouse workshop, Riikka Maria will bring the latest dance moves straight from Angola. Afrohouse, which is rooted in the Angolan dance style kuduro, is relaxed and energetic, featuring plenty of footwork. Come and learn something new!
Friday’s Workshops Take You to Kenya and Guinea
Experience the playful and grounded Odi Dance in Friday’s workshop led by Kenyan dancer Joshua Yoga. Odi Dance incorporates influences from dancehall and improvised street dance practices from Kenyan urban culture. Currently based in Helsinki, Joshua is a versatile dance teacher and choreographer and the founder of Empire Dance Kenya, one of Kenya’s leading dance schools.
On Friday, Finnish pioneer of African dance, dancer, choreographer, and musician Outi Kallinen, will guide participants into the world of traditional West African dances. Energetic dances will be accompanied by live drumming. As an experienced teacher, Outi shares insights into the cultural backgrounds of the dances and helps dancers of all levels understand the rhythms and movements.
A Rare Opportunity to Explore West African Singing Traditions
Saturday’s workshops offer a chance to learn from the masterful Fanta Yayo, who will teach traditional dances from Guinea. Participants will learn lively choreographies and the distinctive style of Guinean dance. Having received rigorous dance training in Guinea, Fanta teaches regularly in Stockholm and also travels internationally to lead workshops.
Fest Afrika also offers a rare opportunity to participate in a Guinean singing workshop led by Fanta. In Guinea and throughout West Africa, singing plays an important role not only as entertainment but also as a means of preserving oral traditions. During the workshop, Fanta will also share the stories and cultural backgrounds behind the songs.
For those new to African dance, Joshua Yoga’s Afrofusion workshop is a perfect choice for Saturday afternoon. The class offers participants an opportunity to explore the fundamentals of African dance styles in a fun and encouraging environment.
Fest Afrika concludes with Annina Tuhkunen’s Afro dance and body care workshop. After energetic dancing, participants will have the opportunity to restore and care for their bodies under Annina’s professional guidance. Annina has extensive training and long-term experience, particularly in West African dance traditions.
